Diablo 3 Anime Series in the Works?

May 11, 2012 in News

The video featured above is the Diablo 3 Wrath Trailer, an animated short film that depicts a battle, ages ago, between the angels and demons where a group of the strongest angels took on Diablo and his minions. It details much of the backstory of Imperius, the angel of valor, who I believe will play a very significant role in the storyline of Diablo 3. From small clips we’ve seen of the CG animation that will take place throughout the game, it looks like Imperius is going to be very involved. I’m willing to bet he’ll be more along the lines of a villain than a hero, and that we’ll have to fight him at some point as a very powerful boss. It appears that even back then he was going his own way, doing things the way he wanted and making decisions without the consent of the other angels. He breaks all the rules to get what he wants, and this is directly against what the angels are all about. Even Diablo sees it in him, that growing evil, his “true self”.

For the creation of this animated short film, Blizzard hired the director Peter Chung and the animation studio Titmouse Inc. and the video was the final unlock of their “Darkness Falls, Heroes Rise” promotion for the game, set to come out May 15th, only a few short days away. There are quite a few people complaining that they would have preferred that the video had been done in the same 3D CG style that the in-game cutscenes were made with. Interestingly, Blizzard chose to go with this animated style instead. But for what reason? Obviously they were very capable of making a clip like this in their CG style, unless it was on very short notice or something, but it seems strange for them to turn to a more animated style after working with 3D since the game was announced. Perhaps there is some ulterior motive here, such as testing the waters?

While this is just speculation and nothing has been announced or even hinted at, it is possible that Blizzard worked with this animation studio for more than just this single animated short. Depending on the success of Diablo 3, and the popularity of the Wrath trailer, as well as how much hype it gets and the fan’s response to the animation style, perhaps they were considering making more episodes along these lines for interested fans. Whether it would be something they would host on YouTube, stream on their main site, or even add into a Collector’s Edition of Diablo 3′s first expansion is up to anyone’s guess. But I do believe that Blizzard may well be working with Peter Chung and Titmouse Inc. again, and we fans of Diablo 3, as well as their other games, may find ourselves in a position where we have the option to watch the entire back-stories of our favorite games unfold in anime-esque fashion. Imagine buying a DVD set of full, high quality episodes along the lines of this short film. How many of you would be interested?

Sneak Peek at High Level Gear in Diablo 3

January 9, 2012 in News

The result of data mining, a handful of sets of high level armor for every class in Diablo 3 have been revealed. The video starts with what I consider to be the best of the best, some of the Barbarian gear. Now, I’ve read a lot of complaints over comments and the like that people have a big issue with the fact that the armor is so bulky on almost every class. It’s like they’re all wearing plate armor or something. But on the Barbarian, that fits perfectly, and they look cool as hell with it. Not to mention the enormous weapons, like that sword. The skull helmet on the second suit of armor is something I really enjoy, and it seems like it could go with just about any suit of armor and match nicely. I noticed one of the Barbarian armors also makes them look like a Templar follower, so I’m wondering if that might have actually been a Templar set.

Once the Barbarian is up, we have some images of some high level female Demon Hunter armor. These look…interesting. Not quite what I expected from the Demon Hunter, after the impression I was given from the original Demon Hunter concept art. But they don’t look bad, and certainly aren’t too bulky, so I suppose that’s a plus. The colors do seem relatively plain compared to the others, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I think plainer colors are what many fans would consider closer to the normal Diablo series.

Out of all the classes shown I’d have to say Monks look the most ridiculous and the furthest from what I’d expect Monk armor to look like. They’re wearing clownish plate gear, very colorful and very ridiculous. Since the class was originally portrayed as some sort of robe wearing Buddhist monk with a long staff, looking at it in bulky metal armor with a spiked face mask just totally threw me off. I’m hoping they switch it up and make it so that they look more like genuine traditional monks, because that was one of the main selling points for the class in my personal opinion. The way they are now they look more like a class that would be labeled something like “Mercenary”.

Most of the Wizard armors look as I expected they would. They’re no traditional wizards, but I don’t mind that. I like the way they look and I wouldn’t have a problem running around wearing that on my Wizard. Their helmets are crazy but I kind of like them, and I’m sure they’ll give the option to turn them off if you’re not a big fan. Almost every game I’ve played lately has that feature.

I’m a big fan of the Witch Doctor sets, especially their helmets. I noticed one of them had a Cthulu vibe to it. Very awesome. This is pretty much what I was expecting for a high level Witch Doctor set, and I’m looking forward to getting my hands on that Cthulu set should I roll a WD. It’s somehow fitting for the Witch Doctor.

Keep in mind that if you don’t like the way these initial high level sets look, the armor sets are likely to evolve as time goes on in the game and they’ll begin to cater to what players do and don’t like. Check out the evolutions from just tier 1 to 5 in World of Warcraft as they progressed through the game. Tier 5 blows Tier 1 out of the water, and really accurately expresses “Warlock”.

New Cinematic Trailers Released

January 3, 2012 in News

We start with the most recent cinematic trailer, the one that so far seems to be what the official release of Diablo 3 will begin with. Although the second cinematic trailer I post here will be a bit older, I feel this one belongs first in terms of chronological order.

The video begins with Leah having another one of her apparently typical vivid daydreams that may or may not send her into other worlds allowing her to communicate directly with hideous creatures, or more accurately allowing them to communicate with her, as you shall see in the next trailer. Sounds (and seems) like a bunch of nightmares all the time. This particular daydream was most likely fueled by the teachings of Leah’s uncle, Deckard Cain, who is trying to warn her and the rest of the world of the coming evil.

She wakes up breathing heavily, with Deckard trying to make sure she believes everything he’s told her so far. Because, you know, if she doesn’t, literally about 5 seconds after he mentions the coming darkness it arrives in the form of a giant meteor that immediately plunges him into the depths of hell. He certainly went to a lot of trouble making sure she bought his story. Obviously it pays off:

As I said, in the next video we see that Leah has bought Deckard’s story, as she is hard at work upholding the Cain legacy, reading and writing until her quill snaps and spills ink everywhere. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the black soulstone decides to amplify Leah’s vivid daydreaming abilities, leading her to what I can only imagine to be the most frightening place of her life thus far. She’s greeted by a group of armored skeletal figures, dust covered and resting on thrones, which suddenly move their heads toward her and open their glowing red eyes in her direction. Before they’re able to add her skeleton to the collection they’re a part of, though, a giant cloud of dust shows up and they presumably give up because that smug prick Azmodan ruined their moment.

So Azmodan shows up, stares down at Leah who has no idea what’s going on, and starts telling her she’s never going to outsmart him and that even though they were able to beat the other lords of hell, he, Azmodan, the Lord of Sin, will not be defeated. That he’s going to break out with a legion of horrifying demons and hunt her down to pluck the black soulstone from her cold dead fingers, and she should probably start writing her will, assuming he leaves anyone alive for her to pass things onto.

P.S. – Am I the only one who is creeped out by Azmodan’s giant manboob nipple piercings?
